My love/hate relationship with crowd surfers
Today I went to the DC 101 Chili Cook-Off. It was in the parking lot of RFK Field. Long story short…Bands. Drunkards. Sweat. Epic.
I understand crowd surfing and moshpits are a part of the whole rock concert experience and atmosphere, but WTF?!?!?!? Here’s my beef.
Ok, if you’re unaware/unknown to crowd surfing, watch the video :-)
You have the surfers, and the waves…aka the people who move the surfers. I’m sure this has been happening for years, but today, I moved at least 200 people, no joke.
So I saw Seether perform, and while they were on stage, I just saw people move across me and come my way. So I did my part and just moved them along. It was fun at first, then it just became annoying. Instead of enjoying the concert, and taking in the moment…I was occupied with watching out for the surfers safety and mine as well. You have to keep your head on a constant swivel. You start sweating, people fall on you, kick you in the head, and it becomes more of a duty than enjoyment. I saw some SERIOUS falls, and some guys who got all TOO happy when the girls when surfing. Its kind of inconvenient and disrespectful to the concert goer who just wants to see a band perform.
By the way, I’m not ashamed to say there should be a weight limit on crowd surfers. Some people should make everyone happy and just keep their two feet on the ground.
Then Weezer took the stage next, dope guys. By now, not only am I closer, but I actually enjoy watching bands perform live. It’s something to see. So the concert starts, and before I knew it…I was passing people along the crowd. I had to keep my head on a swivel, and couldn’t enjoy the concert as much. Then after awhile, I had enough and left the crowd, it was just too much.
It was a fun experience, but I’m pooped. Carrying 200 people over your head is not only a workout, it’s tiring, and left me with a sore right shoulder.
